Citizen in City Governance through Ward Committees
"The best way to create awareness is word of mouth. One needs to educate citizens about the benefits of engaging with the government."
Episode 7 of Season 1 of our podcast “Talk in the Town”, features Mr. Nigel Albuquerque, the co-founder of the Mangalore Civic Group (MCG) and a dedicated social and civic activist. Mr. Albuquerque, along with like-minded citizens, established MCG in 2017 to address the numerous civic challenges faced by the people of Mangaluru. The group’s primary objective was to advocate for the formation of Ward Committees and Area Sabhas, reflecting the true spirit of the 74th Constitutional Amendment of 1992 and the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Act of 2011.
Taking the judicial route, MCG successfully established Ward Committees and Area Sabhas under the Mangaluru City Corporation, marking a significant milestone in promoting citizen participation in local governance. In this insightful conversation, Mr. Albuquerque shares his journey of community activism, what actually happens in a ward committee meeting, and how more citizens can be encouraged to participate in local decision-making processes.
Tune in to learn how MCG is paving the way for citizen-centric urban management in Mangaluru, making governance more ground-up, inclusive, and possible.
